City of Aiken Announces Severe Drought Conditions and Recommends Voluntary Reduction in Non-Essential Water Use

Aiken, SC – The South Carolina Drought Response Committee (DRC) has announced that all South Carolina counties, including Aiken, are in severe drought status as of their recent meeting on May 21, 2026. Since the severe drought conditions have persisted since the DRC’s last meeting on April 30, 2026, the City of Aiken’s Engineering and Utilities Department requests that water customers curtail non-essential water use such as:

washing sidewalks and driveways, or other hard surfaces

washing buildings or structures for purposes other than immediate fire protection

maintaining decorative water bodies for aesthetic or scenic purposes, except where necessary to support aquatic life

reduction in other non-essential uses of water where possible
