He never stepped into the water… but he still saved her life.
Andrew Smith, a shark fisherman in Florida, was enjoying a day at Pensacola Beach when a terrifying emergency unfolded.
A teenage girl was suddenly caught in a powerful rip current and dragged far out to sea. Another girl came running down the beach, screaming for help.
Andrew wanted to jump in and rescue her, but he couldn’t.
Due to a seizure disorder, it wasn’t safe for him to enter the water, he couldn't swim and no one nearby was strong enough to attempt the rescue.
Then, Andrew spotted something that could make all the difference — his fishing drone.
Thinking quickly, he attached a flotation device to it and launched it toward the struggling girl.
Strong winds caused his first attempt to miss, but Andrew refused to give up.
He turned the drone around and tried again. This time, he carefully lowered the flotation device close enough for the girl to grab.
The device kept her afloat until emergency crews arrived and brought her safely back to shore.
Rescuers later said she likely would not have survived without Andrew’s quick thinking.
Her grateful father called him a true “guardian angel.”
