Questions, Questions, Questions, we all have them!
I believe the difference between a good agent and one who's just skirting by is how they answer questions, and this may be true in other fields too, not just real estate so maybe drop a comment and let me know, do you think that being able to answer questions well is a good indicator of competency? or are there other indicators that someone is good at what they do? like what?
let me explain what I mean, questions get asked all the time and a lot of times I'm only able to answer niche questions because I've heard them before, and I have only heard them before because I've been doing this so long I feel like I've heard everything under the sun, so hard questions feel exciting to me!
I feel like when someone says, I know this will be hard to find but....
this goes one of two ways, I either know the answer to the extremely niche questions or I can turn it away with confidence.
For example, penthouse for $1,000? hands down a scam, I've never seen it. 2 bedroom, fully renovated, 10 minutes to downtown, off South 1st?? difficult but not unheard of, I know where to find it, and I leased a client who had this exact request last year. (she loved her place so much she renewed!)
so in my mind, the ability to answer questions just equals experience and experience in my opinion can be a strong indicator of a good agent, but definitely not the only one. (new agents can be just as excellent)
That brings me to second layer to this that's not just "I have the answers" because nobody has them all, and nobody really needs to.
I believe true professionals know when to tilt their heads and say "I've never thought of it that way" or walk with enough humility to say "in order to help you to the best of my ability let me ask -" or they know how to answer a question with a question and express compassion, let me explain.
"In case we're not able to find an apartment of that size in the area you're wanting would you rather be a few minutes out or be in something a bit smaller" that way, answers to questions can become questions, that become answers, and there's compassion involved, we don't say "you can only afford a studio, either that or the bridge under the street if you want to be downtown" we say "what matters the most to you? what room do you spend the most time in? what can we prioritize when searching for your new home?"
If I hear an agent asking these questions, I know I'm in good hands.
my favorite question as a real estate agent? "what's important to you?" because I feel that if I can nail that question, I've truly succeeded.
what are your thoughts? any questions?
