Could Austin really land an NHL team?

For now, the honest answer is “maybe,” but this has moved well beyond casual speculation.

The NHL has entered a formal six-month process with the Friedkin family to evaluate Austin and Houston as possible homes for what would become the league’s 33rd franchise. The estimated investment is approximately $3.5 billion, including the expansion fee and construction of a new arena.

Houston had a significant head start, with discussions reportedly underway for roughly two years before Austin joined the conversation. But Austin appears to be getting a serious look. The Austin Business Journal recently reported that the Friedkin family’s Pursuit Sports has leased local office space, and Visit Austin is preparing to make the city’s case.

Hockey is not entirely new to our area. The Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars’ AHL affiliate, have played in Cedar Park since 2009 and have developed a strong local following. An NHL team would obviously be an entirely different scale, adding another major professional sport to a region already home to Austin FC, Formula 1 and regular Spurs games.

There are still some very large questions. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has said Austin would need a new arena, and no location, development proposal or financing plan has been announced. The full NHL Board of Governors also has not approved the expansion.

So no, it is not time to start ordering Austin NHL jerseys. But the possibility is real enough that the league and a prospective ownership group are now actively evaluating it.

That is a pretty interesting place for Austin to find itself.

Anyone who has flown through Austin-Bergstrom lately knows the airport has been trying to catch up with the region around it.

AUS was originally built to serve about 11 million passengers annually. This year, it is on pace to serve approximately 22 million.

Some improvements are already here. The new West Infill added more than 75,000 square feet to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, including a larger TSA checkpoint capable of operating up to eight lanes. International arrivals have also gained more space, new baggage carousels and expanded Customs processing.

The next round of projects is considerably larger:

• An 84,500-square-foot West Gate expansion with three additional gates, new dining, more restrooms, family and nursing rooms, a playscape, quiet room, pet relief area and public outdoor balcony
• A new 7,000-space parking garage expected to open in early 2027
• Six additional gates at Concourse M, planned for 2028
• A new 26-gate Concourse B connected to the existing terminal by an underground tunnel
• A completely redesigned Arrivals and Departures Hall with expanded ticketing, centralized security, a larger baggage claim and improved passenger pickup and drop-off areas

The largest pieces are expected to arrive in the early 2030s, so travelers will be navigating construction for a while. Still, these are overdue investments in an airport serving one of the country’s fastest-growing regions.

Round Rock Summer Arts Fest Takes Over Downtown Next Weekend

Downtown Round Rock has changed quite a bit over the last several years. It is no longer just a place to pass through on the way somewhere else. The city has steadily added restaurants, public spaces, live music and community events that give people a reason to stay awhile.

Next weekend’s Round Rock Summer Arts Fest may be the best example yet.

From August 7–9, the streets surrounding the new City Arts Center will be filled with 100 artist booths, live music and dance performances, food trucks, art demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages. Events will stretch across Main Street, Liberty Street, the Downtown Paseo, Prete Plaza and Sheppard Street.

One of the biggest attractions will actually be indoors.

The City Arts Center is now home to Dale Chihuly’s “Ruby Sunstone Pineapple,” a 460-pound sculpture assembled from more than 200 individual pieces of handblown glass. It is the first Chihuly installation on public display in the Austin area and will be shown alongside additional work from Chihuly and Round Rock artist Ziesook You.

The weekend gets an early start Thursday evening with a free exhibit reception at the City Arts Center from 7–9 p.m. and a street dance featuring Dysfunkshun Junkshun from 8–10 p.m.

The main festival begins at noon Friday and continues through Sunday afternoon. Along with the artists and exhibits, the schedule includes three stages of live entertainment, glassblowing and sculpture demonstrations, a b**r garden, food vendors, face painting, balloons, the Prete Plaza splash pad and several opportunities to make some art yourself.

Admission is free, and free parking is available in the City Hall and Round Rock Public Library garages.

Friday, August 7: Noon–9 p.m.
Saturday, August 8: 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
Sunday, August 9: 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

If you have not spent much time in Downtown Round Rock lately, this looks like a pretty good reason to change that.

Round Rock is getting something we haven’t really had at this scale: a true walkable district built around dining, shopping and spending time together, rather than another traditional shopping center.

Construction is underway on The District, a 65-acre mixed-use development near I-35 and SH 45, across from Dell’s campus. The full vision includes more than 150,000 square feet of retail and dining space, along with landscaped walkways, outdoor dining, plazas, green spaces, residences, offices and hotels.

We’re also starting to learn more about what may be coming. The developer recently said the property is under contract for a national specialty grocer and a gelato shop, with a potential entertainment-focused business such as a music venue also being discussed. No tenant names have been announced yet, so let the speculation begin.

The first residential building is already underway and will add 316 apartments with approximately 23,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. That phase is currently expected to be completed in early 2028, while the larger District will continue developing in phases over the years ahead.

If the finished project comes close to the vision, this could give Round Rock another place to meet friends, grab dinner, enjoy happy hour, shop and spend an evening outside without driving into Austin.
