Starting February 5, 2024, homeowners and investors can leverage the HOME Initiative, permitting the construction of up to three residential units on lots initially zoned for one in Austin‼️ Applications must follow the city’s residential plan review process. The initiative aims to address Austin’s high housing costs by allowing more dwellings on SF-1, SF-2, and SF-3 zoned lots. It streamlines the approval process, reducing costs for building multiple units on single-family lots. The HOME program also lifts restrictions on the number of unrelated adults in a housing unit. A second phase, anticipated later, plans to further promote smaller single-family homes by reducing minimum lot sizes from 5,000 to 2,500 square feet.
