If you’ve been downtown lately, it’s pretty hard to miss what’s happening where the old Austin Convention Center used to be.

The redesigned center will nearly double its rentable event space while opening up more of the surrounding area with public spaces, pedestrian connections, and outdoor gathering areas. What’s interesting is that the goal isn’t just to build a bigger convention center. It’s to make those downtown blocks feel like part of the city again, even when there’s not an event happening.

There’s still a way to go, with reopening planned for 2029, but change to the iconic downtown ATX is on the way.
