David Hockney painted swimming pools, California light, the Yorkshire hills, and the people closest to him. No agenda or market strategy, just an unwavering commitment to his own joy.

In 2018 Christie's sold his Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) for $90.3 million(!!), the highest price ever achieved for a living artist at the time.

The most valuable thing he made was also the most personal. What a big splash he made. 🩵

Chefchaouen stopped me in my tracks. An entire city, painted in every shade of blue -cobalt, powder, periwinkle, indigo- and has looked this way for centuries. No trends. No updates. Just total commitment.

I think about this place every time a client falls in love with something unexpected. The house that breaks all their rules. The color they almost talked themselves out of. The neighborhood they didn’t think they wanted.

The best decisions usually feel like that- a little scary, completely right.

DESIGN EYE
Brentwood is one of Austin’s most revealing neighborhoods for understanding how the city’s residential design is evolving. Mid-century homes, original cottages, and modern rebuilds all exist within a few blocks. That contrast makes it compelling.

At 1706 Romeria Dr, the architecture takes a restrained approach. Instead of over-designing, it relies on proportion, light, and flow to define the experience.

When I look at homes like this, I’m not just thinking about finishes- I’m thinking about decisions. What was intentionally included, and what was left out. In modern design, restraint is often what separates ‘nice’ from ‘considered’.

Sometimes I can tell when a home is ‘the one’ for a client, even before they realize it themselves. Past clients have pointed it out to me, and it’s something I’ve come to trust over time.
