By 1835, nearly 600 people lived in San Felipe de Austin. They were bakers, newspaper printers, lawyers, tavernkeepers, and enslaved people. The town served as the capital of Stephen F. Austin’s colony in Mexican Texas.

Today, visitors to San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site —located less than an hour west of Houston—can step back into the historic city. Villa de Austin is an outdoor exhibit composed of a group of buildings that evoke one section of the town similar to how it would have been in the first decades of the 1800s.

Buildings include a schoolhouse, hotel, printers’ office, and courthouse. The work is informed by archeology and archival research that gives insight into what San Felipe looked like nearly 200 years ago.
