It was a picture perfect afternoon in Springfield, Missouri as members of the community gathered to enjoy the 27th annual Japanese Fall Festival at the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden this past weekend. The festival featured arts and crafts, food booths, cultural exhibits, workshops, and a center stage for entertaining performances. As the dog days of summer come to an end here in the Ozarks the season for community festivals comes alive. These annual events celebrate various themes such as local heritage, famous Missourians, farming and agriculture, arts, food, and music. In the month of September you can find more than a dozen festivals in the southwestern part of the state alone. These gatherings provide a great opportunity to meet the members of the community and to experience what they can offer in the way of knowledge, goods, and services. These great festivals are just one of the "Show Me" States highlights at this time of year. Located in Mansfield, Missouri is Rocky Ridge Farm, the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder and also the place where she penned her renowned series of "Little House" books. She and her husband Almanzo lived here from 1896 until her passing in 1957. Although not the setting for her popular books, the friendliness of the people and the natural beauty of the Ozarks did help to inspire her writings about her pioneering family and life on the American Frontier. The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991 and is open to the public for tours.The areas natural beauty and friendly residents can still be found here in the Ozarks. In the history of America's growth, Missouri was a significant location. It was from here that Lewis and Clark began their expedition to the west, following the Louisiana Purchase, at the direction of then President Thomas Jefferson. Their Corps of Discovery departed St. Louis for the Pacific on May 14, 1804 and returned on September 23, 1806 bringing tales of their discoveries and igniting the drive for westward migration. The Gateway Arch and Museum in St. Louis is a monument to President Jefferson's vision of a great America. Completed in 1965 this monument celebrates the westward expansion of our nation and the adventurous citizens who contributed to its growth. A uniquely midwestern phenomena is the rail to trail. Starting in the 1960's this quiet movement began as a way to utilize abandoned rail lines for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. One such trail is the Frisco Highline Trail which runs 35 miles through the Ozarks from Springfield to Bolivar. Public trail users cross through woods and pastures as well as 16 railroad bridges crossing various creeks, streams, and ponds on their journey. You will also find rest stops, points of interest and various historical sites with plaques noting their significance.
