🚨 Quick question: when was the last time you tested your carbon monoxide alarms?

As Northeast Ohio moves toward heating season, this is one household safety check worth putting on the calendar.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends:

✅ CO alarms on every level of the home
✅ Alarms outside sleeping areas
✅ Monthly testing
✅ Annual inspection/service of home heating systems, including chimneys and vents

Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous because you cannot see or smell it.

And here's something many homeowners don't realize:

A CO alarm sitting on the wall does not automatically mean it's still doing its job properly.

Labor Day weekend usually feels like the unofficial end of summer in Northeast Ohio.

It also happens to be a great dividing line for your house.

Before fall gets busy, take 10 minutes and walk around the exterior.

Look at:

🌳 Tree branches overhanging the roof
🧱 Chimney masonry
🏠 Loose siding or trim
🪟 Window and door caulking
💧 Areas where water appears to collect near the foundation
🍂 Gutters that are already collecting early leaves or debris

You don't need tools.

You don't need to climb a ladder.

Sometimes simply walking around your house slowly and actually looking is enough to notice something you’ve passed every day for months.

🔥 Before the first chilly Northeast Ohio night sends everyone running for the fireplace…take a look up.

Chimneys and fireplaces spend months largely ignored.

Before heating season begins, homeowners should pay attention to:

🧱 Cracked or deteriorating masonry
🐦 Animal nests or debris
💨 Damaged or obstructed flues
🔥 Heavy creosote buildup in wood-burning systems
💧 Signs of water entering around the chimney

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends having fireplace and wood-stove flues cleaned and inspected before each heating season.

August may feel early.

But waiting until the first cold Saturday in October—when everyone else calls the chimney company—is another story. 😄

One question should come before picking paint colors or materials:

Does the project require a permit?

The answer varies by municipality—and it may surprise homeowners.

For example, the City of Cleveland says residential permits are required for projects including:

🏠 Reroofing
🪟 Installing windows and doors
🔨 Decks and porches
⚡ Electrical work
🚿 Plumbing
🔥 HVAC work
⬇️ Finishing basements and attics

Minor maintenance and painting generally don't require one.

Why does this matter?

Because when you eventually sell the house, questions about modifications, workmanship and permits can suddenly become very relevant.

🏡 There’s a part of your home you may technically own—but have never actually seen.

Your sewer lateral is the underground pipe that carries wastewater from your house to the public sewer.

Because it’s buried, homeowners often don’t think about it until there’s a backup.

Some warning signs worth paying attention to:

🚽 Multiple drains becoming slow at the same time
💧 Gurgling toilets or drains
👃 Sewer odors
🌱 Recurring unusually wet areas outside
⬆️ Water backing up into a basement drain

Here’s an interesting local fact: the City of Cleveland specifically reminds homeowners that sewer laterals need ongoing maintenance and notes that problems can go unnoticed because the pipe is underground and out of sight.

🏡 Avon Lake homeowners: here's something about your home's drainage you may not know.

Not every Avon Lake street handles rainwater the same way.

According to the City, some streets do not have a separate storm sewer. On certain combined-sewer streets, downspouts are supposed to discharge onto the ground rather than sending rainwater directly into the sewer.

Why?

During heavy rain, slowing the amount of stormwater entering a combined sewer can help reduce the potential for sewer backups into basements.

So before changing where a downspout drains—or assuming the previous homeowner set it up incorrectly, it can be worth finding out how your particular street is designed.

And one more late-summer check:

If you have a rear-yard drain and notice standing water, make sure the drain isn't covered with grass, dirt or debris.

This is one of those cases where knowing how the neighborhood was built can be just as important as knowing how the house was built.

⚡ Quick Saturday home challenge: When was the last time you pressed the TEST button on one of these?

You probably see GFCI outlets every day and don't give them a second thought.

Look around your:

🚿 Bathrooms
🍽️ Kitchen
🚗 Garage
🌳 Exterior outlets
🔨 Basement/workshop areas

See the TEST and RESET buttons?

They're there for a reason.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends testing GFCIs monthly.

If one won't trip when tested, won't reset afterward, or seems damaged, that's something to have evaluated by a qualified electrician.

Now comes the interesting part…

Without looking first: how many GFCI outlets do you think are in your house?

Go count them. The number may surprise you. 😄

💧 There's a drain in your house you may have never thought about and August is a great time to look at it.

Your central air conditioner removes moisture from the air while it's cooling your home.

That water has to go somewhere.

Enter the condensate drain.

If that drain becomes plugged, it can contribute to:

💧 Water around the HVAC equipment
💧 Damage to nearby materials
💧 Higher indoor humidity
💧 Moisture problems you may initially mistake for something else

After a summer of running the A/C, take a quick look around your furnace/air handler.

Standing water, staining, rust, unexpected dampness or a musty smell deserve attention.

It's amazing how much you can learn about a home just by noticing what shouldn't be wet.

☢️ One home issue doesn't care if your house is old, new, remodeled or spotless: radon.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:

"My house is newer, so I probably don't need a radon test."

Not necessarily.

The EPA recommends testing every home for radon regardless of where it falls on a radon-zone map. Elevated radon has been found in homes in every zone.

And you can't:

👃 smell it
👀 see it
👅 taste it

Two homes on the same street can even have very different readings.

This is one of those homeownership topics that isn't very exciting, until you realize you can't determine the answer simply by looking at the house.

🏠 Northeast Ohio homes have taken a beating from weather this year. Here’s something worth checking this weekend.

Our area has already seen multiple rounds of severe weather in 2026, including damaging winds, hail and tornadoes.

The tricky part? Storm damage isn't always dramatic enough to notice from the driveway.

Take a walk around your house and look for:

🔎 Shingles that appear lifted, curled or out of place
🔎 Gutters beginning to pull away from the house
🔎 Loose siding or trim
🔎 Damaged flashing around roof edges and penetrations
🔎 Tree limbs now touching or hanging over the roof

You don't necessarily need a missing section of roof to have a problem.
