Hwy 12 Update: DOT, county officials, EMS, and other officials met this afternoon to discuss the ongoing roadway damage. A plan has been developed that will likely include two approaches.

The emergency ferry route between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point will likely be utilized, along with a one-lane loop around and over the damaged areas. Details of these plans are expected to be released by the county later this evening.

DOT crews have been working to move sand, but their efforts have been hampered by rough ocean conditions and continued water spillover. Last night’s tide and weather also contributed to additional damage to the roadway, which has now nearly tripled in size.

A significant part of the one-lane loop will involve removing damaged asphalt and installing rock as a temporary fix. The roadway will also need to be protected with a berm or small dune.

If the emergency ferry route is implemented, as expected, there will likely be limitations and priority procedures for deliveries of essential goods to the island.

Well gosh. This isn’t what we ever hope while we have guests. We are hopeful NCDOT can make necessary repairs quickly for our guests that are supposed to head home Sunday. Island life sure is unpredictable. 🌴

Safe travels home to our guests! We are so happy to hear that the weather, fishing and relaxation were all great! A week is never quite long enough! We don’t welcome a new family until tomorrow. We allow “any day stays” in the fall and it gives some flexibility with your arrival date. We hope they have a wonderful time in Avon! We love it year round, but fall is truly beautiful there! 💛
