It’s said that people spend an average of 722 days doing dishes over the course of their lifetime—just imagine how many more hours would be taken up without Josephine Cochrane! Cochrane is known for inventing the very first commercially successful dishwasher. Patented in 1886, her design featured a motor-powered wheel that laid flat within a copper boiler—a real novelty since no hand-cranking was required. She established Cochrane’s Crescent Washing Machine Company shortly after filing he patent, and it wouldn’t be long before hotels and restaurants were interested. Cochrane went on to present her machine to the public at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, then her company eventually became KitchenAid, and the rest is history.
