🌅 The Kern is flowing — come be on it while it lasts.
For the first time in a while, water is running through Bakersfield, and week one of Sunsets on the River proved how much this community has missed it. Families waded in, kids played, and the river felt alive again.

Join us every Thursday in July — the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th — from 6:30–8 PM at Yokuts Park. Free and family-friendly, with fly fishing, kids' activities, games, and environmental education as the sun sets behind the mountains. 🎣

Here's the urgency: the flowing water through town is set to be shut off in August. These Thursdays may be the last chance this year to experience this stretch of the Kern alive and running. Bring your family and see it for yourself.

RED ALERT: AB 736, a transfer tax bill currently moving through the California Legislature, could significantly increase the taxes homeowners pay when they sell their homes. This issue matters to every homeowner in California. Please urge your legislators today to vote NO on AB 736.

AB 736 would allow local governments to increase transfer taxes on home sales far beyond what most Californians pay today. For example, for a home that sold for $900,000, the tax could increase from roughly $1,000 today to as much as $13,500 or even $27,000 in some cases.

For many homeowners, that money would come directly out of the equity they have worked for years to build. Whether you're planning to buy, sell, or remain in your home for years to come, policies like AB 736 that increase housing costs will affect all Californians.

There is something so lovely about making Easter eggs this way, using simple ingredients from the kitchen and letting the colors come to life slowly.

To create these perfectly imperfect eggs, start by simmering your natural ingredients in water, things like beets, onion skins, turmeric, purple cabbage, blueberries, or hibiscus flowers. Once the color has deepened, strain the liquid and add a splash of white vinegar. Then place your eggs (they should already be hard boiled) in the dye bath and let them rest. The longer they sit, the richer the color becomes.

What we love most is that no two eggs turn out exactly the same. Some come out soft and speckled, others bold and bright, and that is the beauty of it. A little patience, a little experimenting, and a willingness to let nature do what it does best.

Perfectly imperfect, and all the more beautiful for it.
