We’ve Heard Your Concerns – Let’s Talk About the Proposed Sewer Rate Increase

We’ve seen your posts and messages about the proposed sewer rate adjustment—and we understand your frustration.
This is a significant change, and it’s not one the City takes lightly.
Here’s why this increase is being proposed and how it affects our community:

Why Now?
• Our sewer rates have had only minor increases since 2006—and minor increases since 2016.
• Current Rate: $239/year ($19.92/month)
• Proposed Rate (Starting July 1, 2025): $950/year (approx. $79.17/month)

What’s Driving the Increase?
• Our wastewater system is aging, and major upgrades can’t wait any longer.
• Wastewater Treatment Plant 2, nearly 70 years old, needs critical improvements to keep operating safely and reliably.
• Delaying these projects will only increase emergency costs and the risk of system failure.

How Do We Compare?
Even with the proposed increase, our rates remain below many cities across California, including Anaheim, and Sacramento. Bakersfield has been one of the lowest in the state since 2006.

📣 You Have a Voice.
Residents have the right to oppose the proposed rate increase.
Here’s how: Submit a written protest before the public hearing.
All written protests must be delivered in writing to the City Clerk, City of Bakersfield, 1600 Truxtun Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93301, prior to the conclusion of the public hearing on May 28, 2025.

All written protests must:
1. Identify the assessor’s parcel number
2. Identify the address of the parcel and
3. Include the name and signature of the property owner submitting the protest

If written protests are received from a majority of owners of the affected parcels, the proposed rate increase will not be approved.
Public Hearing Date: Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 5:15 p.m. Location: Council Chambers of City Hall – 1501 Truxtun Ave.
