In a Sunday print edition, The New York Times highlighted the growing Bakersfield real estate market. This is due, in part, to an influx of professionals from other cities. Sage Equities developments were profiled in the article to demonstrate exciting growth in market-rate housing downtown.  We l...

Pinch us! Our developments were in the . Thanks to reporter Jill Cowan for spending some time with us in Eastchester while preparing for this piece.

Here’s the deal— this City is often reduced by outsiders to conventional stereotypes. Jill included many of those in her article. But as she also shows, there is a growing movement of bright hopefuls expanding this narrative. The Bakersfield we know today includes more diversity of residents, people in leadership positions, industries and housing types than ever before. The Bakersfield of the future will likely expand to encompass diversity as a strength in many more incredible ways.

We love playing a small part in this proactive movement.

We relished the chance to speak about our reasons (those that many residents now share) for embracing the idea of a new kind of future for Downtown Bakersfield and this entire region.

We are honored to be included in tomorrow’s Sunday Times.

We see this trend everyday at 17th Place Townhomes:

"Because of the pandemic, Bakersfield has become even more of a desirable destination for those seeking a high quality of life outside the major metropolitan areas of California," Anna and Austin Smith, owners of Bakersfield high-end multifamily rental developer Sage Equities, said by email Friday. "We are situated directly in the center of the most populous state in the country, between two major metro areas, and will increasingly become a landing spot for mobile professionals."

Evidence continues to mount that Kern County's rental-housing market has entered uncharted territory.

The intersection of 18th and Q Streets in downtown Bakersfield is now part of the desirable new Eastchester neighborhood. The need for flex work space is a trend that was accelerated by the pandemic. We have plans to incorporate lots of comfortable spaces with really good Internet - both indoors and out - for residents to WFH at our next projects.

We can't wait to share design drawings of them with you soon. 😉

As working from home gains acceptance and more roles are fulfilled in remote settings, the fundamental principles of workplace design will still apply — just in a residential context.

Kern County has historically been a place where pioneers and risk-takers get their start. We are proud to work alongside so many people who buoy us with their talent and heart.

We’re all craving community and inspiration right now, and so over the weekend, our team at 17th Place Townhomes teamed up with Purveyor to plan a really special (socially distanced) community event.

We worked with Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra to host a concert with two talented local violinists. As musicians played throughout the property, windows flung open and residents popped out to sit on their stoops.

Jeran McConnel provided treat bags with ingredients for after-dinner drinks, handkerchiefs and home baked shortbread cookies. We tucked handwritten notes in each bundle to let residents know that we’re all in this together.

Talented local artist, Jennifer Williams Cordova, provided chalk art in the courtyard. And we even had signs made for each townhome resident to hang in their window.

In planning this event, we felt it was important to highlight and support local creatives. These uncertain times have been especially difficult for creative professionals.

There are also many healthcare workers who call 17th Place home. Here’s our message to you: we see you working long hours, exposing yourself to risk to protect others. We hope you know that we are thankful for you. We’re here for you. You’re the true heros in all of this.

Our Story

Founded by Austin and Anna Smith - affectionately called hometown dreamers and doers - the mission of Sage Equities is to improve the quality of life in Bakersfield.

Sage provides commercial and residential sales, property management, and development services in Bakersfield, California. We are passionate about community. This drives everything we do.

We spent a lot of time while living in larger metropolitan cities dreaming about the potential in our hometown. We moved back to Bakersfield with a sense of purpose. We hit the ground running and developed the 44-unit market-rate community, 17th Place Townhomes, which is now fully leased. We had the vision to turn a dusty brick building that once held an old tire shop into a bustling urban coffee shop - now Cafe Smitten. “Eastchester” is currently the hippest new neighborhood in town, and we’re pretty proud.

We are excited about future projects and just so grateful to get to do what we love everyday. Sage wouldn’t be here without the community’s support. Cal BRE 01934974
