I had an inspection recently and thought it would be a good time to talk about the importance of gutters. Not only do guttes and downspouts direct roof runoff away from walking surfaces they also direct and control the flow of water away from your foundation. Which brings me to the inspection. I was called to look at the back wall of this garage because of the large crack and displaced masonry. As you can see there are no gutters present at the roof edge. When it rains, the water falls directly along the foundation wall. Over time this has washed some of the ground away under the garage slab and has caused the corner to settle and pull away from the rest of the structure. Installing gutters and downspouts are a great way to protect your investment.
