North Georgia EMC, like everyone, is watching the weather. Ice storms can cause significant damage to power infrastructure due to build-up and weight of ice on the lines. NGEMC operates 6,692 miles of line in the northwest Georgia area, as well as 36 substations.
In the event of widespread system outages it will take longer — perhaps even days — to restore all power. It is important to have emergency supplies on hand to last for several days and to have a plan for your family and loved ones.
We encourage everyone to take the following steps:
• Check and refresh the contents of your emergency kits as needed.
• Plan for medical needs and equipment during any outages.
• Charge batteries in radios and phones.
• Prepare your home — consider dripping indoor faucets during extremely cold temperatures and cover or insulate exposed faucets and pipes.
• Check the weather often and check for alerts.
• Bring in or shelter outdoor pets and animals during the storm.
• Check on loved ones and neighbors both during and after the storm.

All crews will be on standby to respond to outages as they occur throughout the weekend. You can monitor restoration progress using our live outage map at www.ngemc.com.
