When designing a living room, I almost always start with the sofa. Why? Because it's often the hardest-working piece in the house.

It's where we gather with family, binge our favorite shows, curl up with a good book, host guests, take the occasional nap, and spend countless hours living our everyday lives.

One of the biggest mistakes I see homeowners make? Choosing a sofa based on how it looks rather than how they live. Before falling in love with a style, ask yourself:

• Are you a "sit up" person or a "curl up and watch a movie" person? Seat depth matters more than most people realize.

• Will this sofa still feel current in 10 years? Trendy details date faster than classic silhouettes.

• Is it large enough? More often than not, homeowners choose a sofa that's too small for the room.

• Where will people set down a drink, charge a phone, or put up their feet? Function should always be part of the design conversation.
