A past client recently told me he had received a notice that the bank holding his mortgage had sold his loan.

I advised him to contact his mortgage company to confirm the notice was real.

If you receive a similar notice, start with the phone number on your existing mortgage statement or the secure portal you already use. Confirm the transfer before changing payment details or sharing personal information.

Then find out whether the company collecting your payments is changing, too. If it is, check the dates, review autopay, and make sure your first new statement matches your records.

Save this checklist for the next mortgage notice that lands in your mailbox.
