Starting October 16th, the North Carolina Oyster Festival kicks off in Ocean Isle Beach, NC as one of the tastiest and most memorable events of the year in this beautiful coastal area of the state! The 45th annual celebration opens Friday evening with a free Community Night concert by The Sea-Cruz Band. The main festival takes over Town Center Park Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Oysters are the star, joined by shrimp, barbecue, sweets, and other festival favorites. You can watch oyster shucking and eating contests, plus Sunday’s oyster stew cook-off. Arts and crafts vendors fill the park with handmade goods and coastal finds, while bands play beach music, country, funk, R&B, and rock. The festival traces its roots to 1978, when its first oyster roast was held at the Ocean Isle Beach Airport. Admission is $5 cash for adults, children 12 and under are free, and pets, coolers, backpacks, and outside food or drinks are not allowed.

If you're planning a mountain getaway to Higher Elevation, don't forget to pack the clubs. The area around Grandfather Mountain and Elk Park is home to some seriously scenic golf—and these aren't your typical flat, wide-open courses.

Here are three mountain courses to put on your list:

⛳ Linville Land Harbor Golf Club
Nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains, this 18-hole course follows the natural contours of the land, with tree-lined fairways, streams, ponds and some beautiful mountain scenery. The course is member-owned but welcomes public play, making it a great option for visitors.

⛳ Sugar Mountain Public Golf Club
At roughly 4,000 feet in elevation, this 18-hole, par-64 course is about as different from your everyday golf course as you can get. Mountain views, streams, rhododendrons and cooler summer temperatures make this a must-play for golfers visiting the High Country.

⛳ Mountain Glen Golf Club
Located just outside Newland toward Elk Park, Mountain Glen is an 18-hole George Cobb-designed course surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's a beautiful setting for a round, with rolling terrain, mature trees and mountain views throughout the course. Public tee times are available on a greens-fee basis.
