Fred’s General Mercantile sits higher than any other general store in the Eastern United States, right in the small mountain town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina. At 5,049 feet above sea level, this longtime store has been taking care of locals and travelers since 1979. Inside, you’ll find just about anything you might need, from groceries and hardware to firewood, winter clothing, and bags of birdseed. Everything is packed into one busy, well-worn space that feels like a true mountain store. Upstairs, the deli turns out filling omelets, fresh biscuits, soups, sandwiches, and homemade desserts. Step out onto the deck and you’re treated to wide views of the Blue Ridge Mountains below. Often called the “everything store,” Fred’s stays open nearly all year and continues to be a daily stop and gathering place for this High Country community.

The Home Depot Foundation is investing an additional $10 million to expand access to skilled trades training for the next generation of construction tradespeople, including a new $1 million partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America

As students head back to school, we’re focused on helping young people gain meaningful insights and pathways into trades careers. Through our Path to Pro program, this new partnership will introduce more than 1,000 Club members in Atlanta, Houston and Phoenix to hands-on learning in carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC.

This pilot will be integrated into Boys & Girls Clubs’ Life & Workforce Readiness Programming and supported by our associate volunteer force, Team Depot, through real-world community projects.

With more than 400,000 skilled labor jobs currently unfilled, it’s more important than ever to invest in early exposure and training opportunities. Together with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and our existing nonprofit partners, we’re helping to build a stronger, more prepared workforce and brighter futures for thousands of individuals.
