Over the next month, Batesville will compete with ten other communities across the South to claim the title of "Best Small Town." Residents can vote daily and help Batesville win the competition. Voting will close at noon on April 1, 2024.

USA Today has previously named Batesville "a top 25 city." Batesville has also been repeatedly recognized as a "trendsetter city" by Arkansas Business and was called "one of the best places to raise a family in Arkansas" by HomeSnacks.

"I am thrilled to see Batesville recognized as one of the best small towns in the South by USA Today," said Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Crystal Johnson. "This honor underscores what we've known all along — Batesville is a gem of a community with endless possibilities."

In 2023, over 300,000 visitors made their way to Batesville. Forty percent of those trips were made by out-of-state travelers, attracting visitors from twenty states. Over 90,000 unique visitors viewed the Christmas Lights at White River Wonderland. Over 27 million dollars were added to the local economy by visitors who live more than 50 miles away.

"I am incredibly proud of our community's vibrant spirit and rich heritage. Being named one of the best small towns in the South is a testament to our residents' hard work and dedication," said Mayor Rick Elumbaugh. "Let's rally together and showcase the warmth, vibrancy, and hospitality that make Batesville exceptional. Every vote counts, so let's make our voices heard and bring home this well-deserved honor!"

Help us prove that Batesville is the Best 'ville' by voting daily until April 1 at https://10best.usatoday.com/awards/travel/best-small-town-in-the-south-2024/

Thank you Lyon College for your kind tribute to my grandmother.

My grandparents were so proud of my years at Lyon. Attending college was important to them, and when I received my degree from Lyon in 2006 they looked on with proud smiles (see photo in comments 😍).

In regard to my grandparents, the tribute mentions: “Together, they ventured into the world of real estate, shaping communities and creating opportunities across several states.”

I hope to follow in their footsteps in my own small way. I’m so proud to be part of their legacy. ❤️

It is with sincere gratitude that we honor and remember the remarkable life of Ms. Josephine Raye Rogers, a beloved member of our community and honorary alumnus whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Lyon College and beyond.

Ms. Raye's partnership with her beloved husband, Doyle, who served on the Lyon College Board of Trustees for years, was the epitome of dedication and entrepreneurship. Together, they ventured into the world of real estate, shaping communities and creating opportunities across several states.

Ms. Raye's legacy extends far beyond business success. She was a tireless advocate for education, healthcare, and community service, dedicating her time and energy to numerous boards and commissions, including the Arkansas College (now Lyon College) President’s Advisory Council, on which she served as a founding member, and the White River Medical Center. Alongside Doyle, she exemplified the spirit of community engagement, actively participating in the life of their Batesville church, First United Methodist Church.

In 1989, Lyon College opened Wilson and Rogers Hall in honor of Trustee Rogers, Ms. Raye, and family, along with Trustee Dr. R. Sloan Wilson and family.

The Rogers's philanthropic spirit knew no bounds, as evidenced by their generous contributions to projects, including the Josephine Raye Rogers Women’s Center and Imaging at WRMC. Ms. Raye's community endeavors, including efforts to found the Old Independence Regional Museum, continue to enrich and inspire us all.

Ms. Raye's legacy of generosity and service lives on through her family, including her daughter, Barbara Josephine Rogers Hoover, her son, Doyle W. "Rog" Rogers Jr., and their families, who continue to embody her spirit of compassion and community engagement.

As we mourn the loss of a dear friend and neighbor, let us also celebrate Ms. Raye’s extraordinary life—a beacon of inspiration whose legacy will continue to inspire us all. Her light will shine on in our hearts forever.

Today we would like to honor the life of a remarkable soul, a beacon of light in our community, and a cherished friend to many. With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a true icon whose presence graced our state with immeasurable warmth and wisdom.

In reflecting upon the past decade, I am humbled to have shared a deep bond with Mrs. Raye Rogers, a woman of unparalleled kindness and compassion. Her genuine concern for others, coupled with her unwavering humility and grace, left an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to know her.

Yet, amidst the sorrow of our loss, let us also celebrate the joyous memories we hold dear. Mrs. Rogers' infectious laughter, her genuine desire to uplift those around her, and her unwavering dedication to spreading love and kindness will forever live on in our hearts. Not only did she contribute to causes she deemed worthy, but she also went the extra mile to become their biggest cheerleader, staying abreast of their progress and monitoring their success.

Though her physical presence may no longer grace our lives, the spirit of Mrs. Raye Rogers will continue to inspire us. Let us also pledge to carry forth her legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering grace. In doing so, we honor not only her memory but also the profound impact she had on each and every one of us.

During this time of mourning, let us extend our deepest condolences to the Rogers Family, offering them comfort and compassion through our prayers and support.
