Even after Winter Storm Fern, frigid air and subzero wind chills are lingering across parts of the U.S., leaving many homeowners wondering how to set the thermostat.
HVAC experts say 68°F is the sweet spot during freezing weather. Energy Star guidance suggests setting it as low as comfortable, typically around 68°F when home and awake, and 3 to 8 degrees lower while sleeping or away.
Keep in mind, raising the thermostat by just 1 degree can increase winter heating costs by 3% to 5%, or roughly $50 to $100 over the season.
