Did you know today—2/11/2026—is National Make a Friend Day? 🤝
Let’s talk about making friends and keeping them—especially when business is involved.
You’ve probably heard the saying that the fastest way to lose a friend is to go into business together. As a REALTOR®, I respectfully disagree. In my experience, many of my clients are friends—and if we weren’t friends before the transaction, we often became friends along the way. A large portion of my business also comes from referrals from friends, and I’m incredibly grateful for the trust they place in me when referring their friends and family.
That said… working with a friend isn’t always the right choice—and that’s okay.
Before hiring a friend in any professional role, ask yourself:
- Is my friend truly an expert in their field?
- Will my friend negotiate and advocate for me at the highest level?
- Can I fully listen to and follow their professional advice—even when it’s not what I want to hear?
- Can we separate friendship from business?
- And most importantly: Would I hire them if they weren’t my friend?
If your answers are all “yes,” then hiring your friend can be a wonderful experience.
If not, have an honest and respectful conversation. Explain why you may need to hire someone else and ask if they can recommend another professional. A true professional will understand—and a true friend will too.
And one last tip: if you choose to work with a REALTOR who is not your friend, please respect boundaries. When it comes to real estate questions about your home, your REALTOR should be your go-to resource.
Here’s to strong friendships, mutual respect, and doing what’s best for everyone involved. 💛
