Be a Better Neighbor By Practicing Good Package Etiquette

The last thing you’d want during the holiday season is to upset neighbors because you were careless about packages being delivered to your apartment. Check out these tips on practicing good package etiquette.

~ Get to Know Your Neighbors: If you haven’t already introduced yourself to your neighbors, now would be an excellent time. After all, you may find yourself needing to meet with them to get a package they received on your behalf. Or, you may find yourself accepting a package to hand over to them. So it would be nice if you were already acquainted!

~ Check in With the Management Office: In a large apartment setting, the management team can be a big help in sorting out packages. Check in with management about their policies about package deliveries. If you are having a package delivered that they accept for you, you’ll want to arrange to get it as soon as possible. You don’t want to take up space in their offices, especially when so many other people may be needing to get their items too.

~ Be Timely With Package Pickup: We all get extra busy from time to time. But that’s not really a good excuse for leaving packages to collect at your front door, or to allow them to remain too long with a staff member of the apartment complex. Make a point of checking for packages being left for you, especially when you are tracking their delivery and know the approximate time they’re due to arrive. No one wants the hallways to be cluttered up with a bunch of boxes.

Brrr! How Can I Prep My Pad and Block Out Those Winter Chills?

Winter is just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about ways to keep your apartment warm and cozy. Winterizing your apartment helps you to keep the heat inside, blocks the cold from getting in, and can even save you money on your utility bills. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Start with the Windows - You can buy at-home window winterization kits to prevent heat loss from the main culprit in every home and apartment: The windows. All you need is a hot air blow-dryer to install the kit. These inexpensive kits create a pocket of air between the see-through plastic and the glass of a window, which acts as an extra layer of insulation.

Stop That Front Door Draft - A bean bag door sweep is a simple and inexpensive solution to that cold draft that creeps in beneath everyone’s front door. It’s a long, slender cloth bag filled with sand or other materials. Simply place it on the floor in front of the door and that chilly draft is a thing of the past!

Don’t Forget the Ceiling Fan - Ceiling fans aren’t just for cooling your apartment in the summer. Every ceiling fan has a switch on the side that can be flipped to reverse the fan’s direction. (Turn the fan off first!) Fan blades should spin counterclockwise in the summer, or clockwise in the winter to push warm air downward.

Indulge in Hot Cocoa All Winter Long!

When you invite friends, family and neighbors over to enjoy some holiday hospitality this winter, you can make get-togethers much more fun by including that favorite drink, hot cocoa.

To satisfy everyone’s thirst, you’ll want to set up your own hot cocoa bar. It’s a fun way to change the ambiance of your apartment and it’s easy to do. Put up a little sign that reads something like, “Welcome to the Cocoa Bar!”

If you’re too busy to make cocoa from scratch, that’s not a problem. Get out your crock pot and fill it with water or milk, and then add hot cocoa powder from a box or packets. The crock pot will keep this beverage piping hot for as long as your guests are hanging out with you. Keep it on the “low” setting for best results.

Assemble some mugs so guests can serve themselves, with a ladle as they pour cocoa from the crock pot. If you have unmatched mugs, that will be nice because each person will be able to keep track of his beverage more easily. Remember to provide marshmallows to top off each mug of cocoa. If traditional marshmallows aren’t your style, you can opt for peppermint marshmallows.

During the holiday season, you may want to get fancy, with some whipped cream, powdered cinnamon to sprinkle on the surface of the cocoa. Try offering candy canes, which you can use to stir the cocoa or smash up to sprinkle on top.

Turkey day is fast approaching! To make your Thanksgiving an event to remember, beautify your apartment with beautiful centerpieces. A lovely centerpiece serves as a focal point for the meal and can even spark comments from your friends, family and neighbors. 🦃

If you haven’t made a centerpiece before or if you want to improve your centerpiece crafting skills, here are some tips to help you brighten up Thanksgiving with a fantastic centerpiece that really suits your sense of style.

~ Gourds and Pinecones: Show off the beauty of nature by crafting together a centerpiece made out of decorative gourds and pinecones. Add some other dried items, including colorful autumnal leaves.

~ Flowers In Pumpkin-shaped Vases: Find some pumpkin-shaped vases and use them to hold beautiful flowers to serve as a centerpiece at your plate-laden table.

~ LED Autumnal Leaves Centerpiece: LED lights will add a modern touch to your new Thanksgiving centerpiece. Since they don’t emit heat, there’s no need to be concerned about this type of illumination in your centerpieces.

~ Rustic Bundles of Wheat: Gather together bundles of wheat (available in crafting store or online). Hold the wheat with colored string or twine to make bundles, then trim them to be all the same size. Then you can mount them upright or position them under glass (referred to as a cloche).

If you are new in town and don’t really know many people here, there’s no need to fret about the lack of socializing! Anyone who is feeling lonely can get out there and encounter all kinds of folks. Here are tips for meeting people to help you make new friends.

1. Volunteer: There’s nothing like doing good for others to help you find new friends to spend time with. The fact that you are volunteering shows that you are a friendly person worth getting to know better.

2. Find Friends in Religion: A great way to make friends with people who share your core values and beliefs is to join a religious group. You can find notices about such groups at local churches, synagogues and mosques, for example, as well as online.

3. Get Involved With a Book Club: If you already love to read, you’re ahead of the game. People love to discuss books they have finished, to get other individuals’ perspectives, and perhaps some unique insight.

4. Take a Class: Think back to the friends you made during high school and college. Friendship is easy to cultivate in between classes, no matter how old you are.

Here’s hoping that one or more of these time-tested ideas will be helpful in you socializing more, meeting some fun and interesting people that will blossom into new friendships.

Ready-In-Minutes PB & Banana Oatmeal

2 cups water
1 cup rolled oats
Pinch of salt
1 banana, sliced
1 tbsp peanut butter
Handful of chopped almonds
Drizzle with maple syrup

In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and add the oatmeal and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, until the oats are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid. Add the bananas, peanut butter, almonds, and syrup and stir to incorporate evenly. If the oatmeal is too thick, add a splash of milk.
