STEWARDSHIP FIRST. QUALITY OVER FORCED PRODUCTION.

As McCormack Home & Garden continues getting back to our original roots, this is one of the principles we’re bringing back with us.

There are many ways to operate a successful landscape company, and different service models work for different properties and different clients. We’re simply becoming clearer about ours.

We don’t want to force work simply because the schedule says it has to happen.

If conditions aren’t right for mowing, we’d rather adjust the visit than risk damaging the turf or leaving behind a result that doesn’t meet our standard. If a garden needs attention, we don’t want to ignore it because we’re rushing to the next stop. And when something on the property deserves a closer look, we want enough time built into the relationship to actually give it one.

Quality over forced production doesn’t mean working slowly. It means working deliberately.

Our goal is fewer rushed stops and deeper relationships with the properties entrusted to our care—lawns, gardens, shrubs, perennials, seasonal needs, and all the little details that make a home and landscape feel truly cared for.

That’s what Property Care means to us.

And yes, we are working today. But we’re working intentionally. After a morning of heavy rain and continued periods of drizzle, that may mean adjusting the order of our work, allowing certain areas more time to drain, modifying what we do at a property, or moving a visit when conditions aren’t suitable.

The goal isn’t simply to say we got the work done. The goal is to leave the property better than we found it.

🌿 YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPLACE YOUR ENTIRE LANDSCAPE.

And that is absolutely okay.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for an established landscape isn’t to tear it out and start over — it’s to become a better steward of what’s already there.

We understand there may be a plant in your landscape that has been there for decades. Maybe it was planted by a previous generation, thoughtfully placed by a landscape architect or steward of the property in their time, or has simply become part of the character and story of your home.

It may be old. It may be overgrown. It may need a refresher.

That is totally okay. History is a good thing.

Not everything old needs to be replaced with something new. Established plants and gardens can carry history, structure and character that simply cannot be recreated overnight.

An older shrub, perennial planting or established garden may just need thoughtful pruning, rejuvenation, division, transplanting, soil improvement or a renewed maintenance plan to bring it back into balance.

We can help you determine:

• What’s worth keeping and caring for
• What has become overgrown and needs to be reduced or rejuvenated
• What should be divided, transplanted or relocated
• What may have simply outgrown its space
• What truly needs to be removed or replaced
• Where small changes can make the existing landscape feel intentional again

Mature trees, established shrubs and perennial gardens have value.

A beautiful landscape doesn’t always have to be a new landscape.

🌿 What does it mean to “edit” a landscape?

Especially in a perennial garden, maintaining the landscape doesn't always mean simply cutting things back, pulling weeds, and adding mulch.

Sometimes, the garden needs to be edited.

Perennial gardens are constantly changing. Plants mature. They spread. They reseed. Some become too dominant, while others disappear behind their neighbors. Colors that once worked together can become unbalanced, and plants that started in the right place may eventually look better somewhere else.

Editing the landscape means observing those changes and making thoughtful adjustments along the way.

That might mean dividing an established perennial and using it elsewhere. Moving volunteer seedlings into a more intentional grouping. Reducing a plant that's beginning to take over. Transplanting something that's being crowded. Creating repetition by moving existing plants throughout the bed. Or sometimes simply deciding not to cut something back yet because it still has a role to play in the garden.

Not every change requires buying another plant.

Sometimes the material for a better garden is already growing right in front of you.

A well-maintained perennial garden isn't necessarily one that stays exactly the same year after year. It's one that's continually observed, guided, and refined as it develops.

Observe. Edit. Let the garden evolve. 🌿

By this time you might see your Black-Eyed Susan starting to wilt. 🌼

DO NOT CUT THEM BACK YET!

Those fading flowers are still doing something important for your garden.

As Black-Eyed Susans finish blooming, their flower heads mature and gradually drop seeds throughout the fall. Leaving them standing gives those seeds a chance to naturally establish around the existing plants.

This is one of the easiest ways to turn a single Black-Eyed Susan into a beautiful burst of color over time. Instead of having one isolated perennial here and there, you can allow them to spread naturally and then organize that growth into larger, more intentional drifts.

And don't worry if they get a little disorganized along the way — that's part of the process!

Once you see where the new plants are establishing, you can decide which ones stay, which ones get moved, and what changes you want to make throughout the garden. You're essentially letting nature give you more plants, then stepping in to shape that growth into the design you want.

So when those bright yellow flowers start looking a little tired this fall, resist the urge to immediately grab the pruners. 🌼✂️

Let them seed. Let them spread. Then design.
