My dad and Mr. McCutcheon, a high school history teacher, brought history alive and I found everything intriguing. The saying "If we don't know our history, we can't prevent it from happening again" always comes to my mind. During my teenage and early 20's, I can remember visiting "The Fort" (as we all called it and still do), numerous times. Of course these times were in the dark and I will admit, in the dark it is extremely creepy. Years ago there was not a fence and there was a lot of graffiti and trash. Since then, there has been a lot of cleaning and some needed upgrades. I am thankful that Fort Freemont has been preserved for all to tour.

The History of Fort Fremont 📍 Saint Helena Island, SC

Built in 1898 during the Spanish-American War, Fort Fremont was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to protect the strategic Port Royal Naval Station—home to the only dry dock south of Norfolk, VA capable of servicing modern battleships.

Fast Facts:

Purpose: Built as part of the Endicott Coastal Defense System to protect Port Royal Sound, the deepest natural harbor on the lower Atlantic coast.

Armament: Equipped with Battery Jesup (three 10-inch breech-loaded disappearing cannons with an 8-mile range) and Battery Fornance (two 4.7-inch rapid-fire guns).

Personnel: Housed up to 110 soldiers and featured 170 acres of infrastructure, including barracks, a hospital, a mess hall, and a bakery.

Combat Record: The fort never saw active combat, serving purely as a deterrent against potential seaborne attacks.

Deactivation: Placed out of commission in 1912 after naval operations shifted to Charleston, SC. Its cannons were later relocated during World War I.

Preservation: Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Beaufort County purchased the property in 2004, opening a public beachfront preserve and a dedicated History Center in 2021.
