History !!!

Did you know... Edmund Rhett drafted The Articles of Secession that led to the Civil War in this building. Along with his brother Robert Barnwell Rhett, Edmund was known as one of the “Fire-eaters” that advocated for secession as early as 1844. In classic Beaufort fashion, the building also served as voter registration center for decades during which untold numbers of freed slave registered to vote at the same site where the words leading to secession and the US Civil war were first put to paper.

PORT ROYAL HISTORY !!

“Between 1875 and 1900 Port Royal surpassed Beaufort in importance in both shipping and commercial activities. In 1880 some southeastern railroads pooled their lines “to establish a through traffic from the Ohio River to Savannah, Charleston and Port Royal.” Two years later Congress authorized construction of a coaling dock and naval storehouse at Port Royal, followed by a naval dry dock and a large, brick sail loft on nearby Parris Island”
