Fort Frederick – Naval Hospital Beaufort

Tucked away along the water sits one of the Lowcountry’s oldest hidden gems…

These tabby ruins date back to the early 1700s and were built as part of the area’s coastal defense system. Tabby—made from oyster shells, lime, sand, and water—was one of the earliest building materials used here, and the fact that it’s still standing today says everything about its strength and history.

Between the picturesque water views and the quiet presence of these ruins, it’s one of those places that just makes you pause for a minute.
