This week in 1908, one of the most successful actors of his generation was born. Fred MacMurray was born in Illinois but grew up in Wisconsin. Fred was a three-sport athlete at Beaver Dam High School and excelled at music. He attended Carroll College in Waukesha on a football scholarship, but his heart was in show business.

Fred began his career as a musician and played the saxophone with many big bands. It wasn’t long before Hollywood noticed and Fred started acting in silent films. Showing his range, MacMurray starred in films such as Double Indemnity, Caine Mutiny, and Disney movies like The Absent-Minded Professor and The Shaggy Dog. On television, Fred played a single father on My Three Sons which ran for 12 years on two different networks.

Fun Fact: In 1943, Fred MacMurray was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and the fourth-highest paid person in America.

More Fun Facts: Fred never forgot his Wisconsin roots. In the movie “Pardon my Past,” Fred and co-star William Demarest (who also played Uncle Charlie on My Three Sons) plan to open a farm in Beaver Dam.

Even More Fun Facts: According to legend, the face of comic book superhero Captain Marvel (D.C. Comics version, not Marvel) was based on Fred MacMurray.
