Sustainable personal hygiene: Such beauty shouldn’t go to waste!

I was at the drugstore yesterday and practically fainted at the hundreds of hair products, face washes, moisturizers, and body care products…all in plastic bottles. I wondered, do we really need to have such a massive impact on the earth just to look and feel good? (I mean, I’m barely passable some days, but still I add to the landfill.) The beautiful truth is there’s plenty we can do to practice more sustainable personal hygiene, which is the topic of this month’s zero-waste journey.

Zero-Waste Housekeeping: Your grandmother would be proud!

Think about this for a minute: Our grandmothers practiced the original version of zero-waste housekeeping. They cleaned with rags, not paper towels, and used homemade cleaning products. I remember my Greek grandmother cleaning her kitchen tile grout with baking soda paste and a toothbrush. (Yes, I inherited her obsessive cleaning gene.) This month, we’re focusing on simple, practical ways to reduce waste in our homes through mindful, low-waste housekeeping.

Together, we’ll explore how small changes—like choosing reusable cleaning tools, making the most of what we already have, and simplifying our cleaning routines—can help cut down on single-use products and unnecessary packaging. We’ll also touch on easy swaps that reduce exposure to harsh chemicals while keeping our homes fresh and clean.
