The work of pursuing freedom, justice, love and peace is ongoing work.
On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and read General Order 3, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”
This announcement took place 2.5 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the South and 88 years after the Declaration of Independence declared that all men are created equal.
Today, we celebrate the Juneteenth Proclamation knowing that there is still work to do. There is still inequity and injustice in our world today, and the work of seeking justice and loving our neighbors is still ours to do.
