For the first time in a while, I treated myself to something nice. I’ve been wanting to get this Seiko watch for about a year now, but I told myself that I wouldn’t get it until I reached a particular milestone in my net worth and I’m very proud to say that I hit it earlier this week!
I’m not one for flashy things as I’d rather spend my money on experiences when I’m not saving or investing it. Heck, I’m still wearing clothes from high school because I don’t see the point in frequently buying new ones lol.
For years, I’ve followed a simple rule—before I spend money on something, I ask myself how long I would have to work to pay for it. If it isn’t worth the time it would take for me to earn that money, then I won’t buy it. This mindset has helped me stay disciplined with my money and get me to where I’m at today.
Now, I only spent around $300 for this watch, so it’s no Rolex by any means lol. I didn’t want to drop a ton of money on a watch, but I still wanted something nice to remind me of all the work I’ve put in these past couple of years to get me to this point. But most importantly, to remind me of my end goal, which is having the freedom to be able to spend my time the way I want.
I feel like I’ve reached a point where I can slow down a bit and not feel so bad if I decide to take some time to do things that are meaningful to me. After all, what’s the point of the climb if you can’t enjoy the view along the way?
I’m not sharing this to brag, although I realize it’s still going to come across that way to some. Unfortunately, money is treated as a taboo subject, but it doesn’t have to be. If we could all learn from each other, we could give ourselves the chance to build a future where we no longer have to trade our time for money and instead focus on what truly matters in life.
My hope is that this will encourage some of you to begin your own journey toward financial independence. It’s never too late to start. You may not know where exactly you’re going, but taking the next step that’s in front of you will eventually lead you to where you’re meant to be. I believe in all of you!
