You can spend a LOT of money on a renovation…and somehow still end up with a house that looks like a flip. 😬
Usually, it’s not one big mistake. It’s a bunch of choices that make the home feel generic instead of thoughtfully designed.
A few we watch out for 👇🏼
1️⃣Using the same “safe” finishes everywhere. One flooring throughout. One cabinet style. One tile repeated in every bathroom. Cohesive is good, but a home still needs personality.
2️⃣Removing every bit of original character. Old doesn’t automatically mean bad. Millwork, fireplaces, built-ins, interesting doors and other architectural details can be exactly what keeps a renovated home from feeling brand new in the wrong way.
3️⃣Choosing whatever is trending instead of what belongs in the house. The goal isn’t to make every home look like the same Pinterest board. We want the finishes to make sense with the home’s architecture, setting and personality.
4️⃣Ignoring the small details. Trim profiles, hardware, switch plates, grout color, lighting placement, transitions between materials…these aren’t necessarily the exciting purchases, but they’re often what separates “flipped” from “finished.”
5️⃣Spending on finishes without fixing the function. Beautiful countertops won’t make an awkward kitchen work better. Before we get to the pretty stuff, we’re thinking about flow, storage, sightlines and how a family will actually use the space.
