☀️ Weekend Worth the Drive: Ashland, Nebraska

If you're looking for a summer adventure that can keep everyone happy, Ashland might be one of the best day trips in Nebraska.

In fact, the more time I spend there, the more I understand why so many people choose to live nearby.

A few highlights:

🦬 Wildlife Safari Park – Drive through herds of animals from the comfort of your own vehicle, then stop along the route to stretch your legs. There's even a short hike up to see the wolves that's the perfect length for younger kids.

🚂 Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum – One of Nebraska's most impressive museums, packed with aircraft, space exhibits, and plenty to explore.

🌊 Mahoney State Park – A summer favorite with a water park, horseback riding, paddle boats, hiking trails, a climbing wall, and enough activities to fill an entire weekend.

🥾 Platte River State Park – Beautiful trails, fishing, a splash pad, scenic views, and plenty of opportunities to get outside.

🍔 Ashland Brewing Company – Great food, local brews, pickleball courts, and a perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring.

The best part? Everything is close together, making Ashland an easy destination whether you're looking for a quick day trip or a full weekend adventure.

Honestly, after putting together this list, I think I just sold myself on moving there.

Weekend Worth the Drive: Pawnee Plunge in Columbus

If you're looking for an easy summer day trip from the Omaha area, Pawnee Plunge in Columbus deserves a spot on your list.

It's about 90 minutes from Bellevue and home to the only FlowRider surf simulator in Nebraska.

A few reasons we like it:

🌊 Water slides and pools for all ages

🏄 Nebraska's only FlowRider

🍕 The giant Pizza Hut in Columbus (because sometimes nostalgia matters)

🎱 Big Ten Sports Bar, where the pool tables can keep the kids entertained while everyone cools off and grabs a bite to eat

🎰 Harrah's Casino if the adults are feeling lucky

🏨 Rivers Edge Hotel, located right next to the water park and consistently praised by out-of-town visitors

You can easily make this a day trip, but there's enough to do that an overnight stay can be worth it too.

There's a running joke around base: "Once you get Offutt, you can't get off it."

And after working with enough military families relocating to Omaha, I can tell you it's not really a joke.

Most of my clients arrive skeptical. They've got orders to a state they didn't pick, in a city they don't know much about, and they're mentally preparing to white-knuckle a three-year tour.

By the second year, most of them are asking me about buying instead of renting.

Just published a new blog about what they keep finding here — the neighborhoods families gravitate toward, the schools, what your paycheck actually does in this market, and the few honest downsides nobody warns you about before you PCS in.
