North Carolina is still a beautiful place. We have natural resources and varied environments. We also have a strong sense of community and spirits that will not be broken.
When our neighbors to the west in the mountains took the brunt of Helene’s destruction, there were few doubts how we would respond. So many people are giving their time, skills, money, and attention to the victims of this terrible tragedy. We at Kiser Harriss wanted to pitch in our skills and time, too.
We are proud of the work by our entire team in helping to make even a small contribution to the cause and further commitment to doing more. So far we have worked with local organizations Least of These Carolinas and Pisgah ARP Church to deliver three full truckloads of water. We have assisted in Weaverville, Waynesville, and Asheville near Biltmore Village. We have delivered important personal care and food items through Compleat Kidz - Pediatric Therapy and Alchemy Coworking.
Every person is able to contribute to the wellbeing of others in some way. When there is a tragedy so close to home, it is imperative that we help as we can. We offered transportation to help donations move.
If you are able, please think about donating in some manner to those displaced or suffering in the aftermath of this storm.

Today we were proud to welcome Brandon Wingate from Ryder to our office to honor D**k White. Ryder chose D**k as their Business Unit Driver of the Year. That means the Driver of the Year for North and South Carolina. There are over 10,000 units on lease in that area to give a reference for the scale of how big an honor that is to be chosen. We are incredibly proud of D**k and honored to get to work with him.

We were honored to participate in this year’s Truck Convoy for Special Olympics North Carolina. The Truck Convoy is an annual event which unites law enforcement and truckers to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics athletes and change attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities. More than 100 trucks travel 28 miles up and down I-485 before returning to the zMax Dragway.
Kye Neal and Tyler Frady represented Kiser Harriss at the event.
A big thank you to Kye for letting us know about the event and wanting to be involved.

Today we were honored to recognize Ricky Cooke as our first Driver of the Month award recipient.

Ricky has been a professional driver for 47 years and logged over 4 million miles on our nation’s roads hauling petroleum products, construction materials, and now helping Kiser Harriss customers. Ricky’s commitment to safety and his driving records speak for themselves.

Congratulations, Ricky! Thank you, and continue to stay safe!

Memorial Day

Today is an important day of reflection for our nation. As Americans we have been blessed with dedicated and selfless fellow citizens who have been willing to answer the call to arms and defend our nation. Memorial Day is set aside from all others to honor the men and women who gave all for their country and did not return. Please take a moment to remember their sacrifices.

“A Soldier of the Union mustered out,”
Is the inscription on an unknown grave
At Newport News, beside the salt-sea wave,
Nameless and dateless; sentinel or scout
Shot down in skirmish, or disastrous rout
Of battle, when the loud artillery drave
Its iron wedges through the ranks of brave
And doomed battalions, storming the redoubt.
Thou unknown hero sleeping by the sea
In thy forgotten grave! with secret shame
I feel my pulses beat, my forehead burn,
When I remember thou hast given for me
All that thou hadst, thy life, thy very name,
And I can give thee nothing in return. - “A Nameless Grave” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

As a favorite television neighbor of countless American children, Fred Rodgers had the ability to look through the darkest clouds of tragedies and see pinholes of light. To comfort people in times of strife he said: “My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

Kiser Harriss was approached by a group of these helpers. Gaston County Commissioner Tracy Philbeck contacted John Kiser and asked if we could help one of our area’s valuable resources during this crisis; Gaston Faith Community. Gaston Faith Community is a task force, founded by Austin Rammell and John McCullough, and composed of local churches and pastors. It has been created with the purpose of communicating needs and concerns of the church communities with the county and as a means for the county to provide support back to the churches and their congregations. These churches are then able to serve and supply their communities with necessities. Gaston Faith Community is being supplied food to distribute by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

We at Kiser Harriss are honored to have been approached by Commissioner Philbeck to provide some logistical support for this project. Our team will have delivered four loads of food to the Gaston Faith Community from the food bank before Good Friday.

These fantastic people are braving a pandemic, risking their own well-being, to provide food to those hardest hit in our community. We are proud to be able to assist their mission. We are also proud of our drivers and managers who have been the closest points of contact with this project. They are helpers in the best sense.

We always close our meetings with these three short directions, but they seem even more appropriate right now.

Thank you.
Stay focused.
Be safe.
