Not the glossy brochure version, but the lived-in truth from someone who’s made the move and knows both sides of the story. #6 is personally, the biggest challenge for us in Bend. #
Here’s the good (and the not-so-good) about life in Bend:
🌲 The Good Stuff
1. The Lifestyle You Dream About Is Real:
Morning trail runs, coffee at Thump, paddle-boarding the Deschutes, skiing Mt. Bachelor before lunch — it’s not hype. People here actually live that “work hard, play harder” rhythm. It’s a deeply connected, outdoor-loving community.
2. Small-Town Vibes, Big-City Taste:
Bend may be mid-sized, but the food, coffee, breweries, and design scene rival larger cities. You’ll find world-class restaurants, boutique gyms, craft everything, and a creative energy that feels bigger than the population count.
3. The Views That Never Get Old:
The mountains literally anchor your perspective. From Tumalo Butte to Pilot Butte sunrises, there’s this constant reminder that you’re surrounded by nature’s masterpiece.
💭 The Not-So-Good (Let’s Be Real)
4. It’s Not Cheap Anymore
That small-town affordability people talk about? It’s gone. Housing prices have climbed steeply over the past decade, and groceries, dining out, and utilities all carry a “mountain town tax.”
5. Growth Pains Are Real
Bend’s charm is part of what everyone’s chasing — which means traffic is up, new construction is everywhere, and locals sometimes push back against change. It’s a town redefining itself in real time.
6. You Might Miss the Diversity
Culturally, Bend is still growing. It’s very community-oriented but not particularly diverse — something many new residents from larger metro areas notice right away.
