50 years ago, women couldn’t get a mortgage without a man’s signature. That changed with the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) signed into law on YESTERDAY 51 years ago; October 28, 1974.
The ECOA made it illegal for lenders to discriminate based on s*x or marital status, finally allowing women to apply for credit, loans, and mortgages in their own name.
Fast-forward to today:
• In 2024, women made up ~20% of all homebuyers 👀
• Women own 2.7 million more homes than single men across the U.S. (This feels like a skewed stat because it’s not saying they bought them…they could have survived their husbands… I won’t get in the weeds here, moving along)
• Nearly 1:4 first-time buyers are women purchasing solo.
• And personally, 16% of my 2025 sales (so far) are solo women signing their own mortgages!
Homeownership / real estate investing is freedom, and thanks to a 50-year-old law, women have the power to sign, own, and build equity entirely on their own terms.
Let’s remember how far we’ve come, history should never be forgotten. Cheers to 50 years of (legally) signing our own deals gals 💓
