The famous Metolius River, a beautiful spring creek, is a 30-minute drive from this house’s driveway. The gateway to the Metolius is the charming little village of Camp Sherman, and a visit to the Camp Sherman Store & Fly Shop is a must!

The Metolius is world-famous for its fun, challenging—and rewarding—fly fishing, hikes along the river and stunning beauty.

Most of the river is open to catch-and-release fly fishing all year, and it is common to see fish feeding on mayfly hatches in the middle of winter. Because it’s a spring-fed river, the water temperature is 48 to 50 degrees all year long. For many, the Metolius is paradise.

I ran away to the Crooked River this past Sunday to fly fish with my husband. The Crooked is full of beautiful wild redsides rainbow trout, and the fishing (and catching) is good throughout the fall and in the winter as well. We often fish this river for a couple of hours on New Year's Day.

Central Oregon has many great year-round trout streams — the Crooked, the Middle Deschutes and the Metolius River — and we feel so lucky to live here!
