Thirteen years ago, we dropped this girl off in a Spanish immersion kindergarten class - and a small group of kids who would end up learning, growing, and moving through public school together for the next 13 years.
At the time, it felt a little like an experiment for us. But we trusted her teachers, we believed in the program, and it aligned with our values. We also felt incredibly lucky that a program like this even existed and that Elliot had the opportunity to be part of it.
Last week, we attended a special ceremony and watched Elliot and her classmates receive the Seal of Biliteracy from the State of Oregon.
What she and her classmates have accomplished is truly remarkable, and it makes me swell with pride.
To be bilingual — to know more than one language, to be able to engage more deeply with another culture and experience the world through a wider lens — is such a special thing.
Congratulations to this remarkable young woman, and thank you to all the teachers who poured their time, talent, care, and education into Elliot and her classmates over all these years.
