WTF Friday | Washer Drain Edition

Somebody decided the crawlspace could handle the laundry drainage.

The washing machine drain hose ran straight down through the floor and emptied under the house. Every cycle sent gallons of gray water onto the crawlspace floor instead of into the plumbing.

Moisture like that feeds mold, attracts pests, and works its way into the floor framing. And it never really dries out down there.

The fix is straightforward. Route the drain into a proper standpipe tied into the plumbing.

WTF Friday | Crawlspace Edition

In older Bend homes, especially some of the 1930s and 1940s mill homes, it’s not unusual to find a little creative crawlspace engineering.

But this one was on a different scale.

Dry-stacked lava rock. Wood shims. Floor beams resting on top. No proper footing. No secured support.

The impressive part? It’s been holding for more than 70 years.

The less impressive part? It’s still dry-stacked rock and wood shims supporting the structure.

At some point, “it’s been there forever” stops being a structural strategy.

Time to reform the support system and de-lava-rock the crawlspace.

When the AQI climbs above 150 the air inside your home becomes a real concern, even with windows and doors closed.

This is where a Corsi-Rosenthal box comes in.

It is a DIY air purifier built from four 20x20x1 furnace filters and a box fan. Air is drawn in through all four sides, filtered and pushed clean out the top. It costs about $50 to build, takes around 15 minutes to assemble and outperforms many commercial air purifiers when it comes to filtering wildfire smoke particulates.

In this video we build one from scratch and show exactly how it works. This is not a permanent fixture — it is something you build and deploy when air quality gets bad and put away when conditions improve.

Use MERV 11 rated filters or higher for best results during smoke events.

Wildfire smoke season is here. Three things every Central Oregon homeowner should do right now.

Replace your HVAC filter. Then go to your thermostat and set the fan to run continuously — not auto. This keeps air moving through that fresh filter all day long even when your system is not heating or cooling. Most homeowners skip this step.

Last — plug your foundation vents. The vents along the base of your home are a direct pathway for smoke and embers. Temporarily plugging them during active smoke days is simple and effective.

Part two covers how to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box — a $50 DIY air purifier that works better than most store-bought options. Stay tuned.
