Ornithologists, welcome! At Roaring Brook Retreat we are the perfect haven for the avid bird watcher! Spotted but not limited to northern flickers, ruby-throated hummingbirds, chickadees, robins, finches, sparrows, warblers, blue jays, ravens, doves, barn owls, and more.

Oh, and there’s another possibility too! Let me tell you a little story . . .

One late night in March, almost 12 a.m., we arrived at Roaring Brook Retreat during a downpour. As our headlights beamed onto the property, I noticed a large white owl with a round head perched on our post. His enormous size and yellow stare (from what I recall in that moment) took my breath away! Were we in the presence of a great creature of the woods? My suburban heart skipped a beat.

Not amused by our bright headlights, he puffed out his white belly and lifted his wings. Black flecks flashed us as he departed into the woods.

I’m convinced it was a Snowy Owl, a rare sighting. I searched and searched and the only images that matched his massive round head and silhouette was the majestic bird of the Arctic.

I’ll never know for sure—but I’ll never forget that encounter!
