Hipped vs. Gable Roofs: The Ultimate Rooftop Rumble 🥊
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t always get the spotlight—but totally deserves it: roofs. Specifically, the classic architectural showdown between Hipped and Gable roofs.
Now, I know what you're thinking...
“Mike, have you finally lost it? Are you really writing about roof shapes?”
Yes. Yes, I am.
As many of you know, Kyla and I love architectural design—especially when it comes to real estate. Our dream is to one day build homes together… think Chip and Joanna vibes. Except, well—I don’t really know how to build anything. 😂
Anyway, we’ve been having the debate: Which roofline looks better?
I’m Team Hipped Roof all the way—cleaner, smoother, just feels more refined.
Kyla? She loves the drama of high pitches, so she’s Team Gable Roof.
So I’m reaching out to my favorite people to help us settle this!
But first, let’s break down the difference…
In This Corner: The Gable Roof 🏠
Picture the classic triangle roof you drew as a kid—that’s your Gable. It's simple, sharp, and gives your home a bold, defined look. Bonus: it handles snow and rain like a champ (not that we get a ton of that here in Albuquerque).
Pros:
✔ Clean, classic look
✔ Great ventilation
✔ Cheaper to build
Cons:
✖ Vulnerable to high winds (looking at you, springtime gusts)
✖ Can feel a bit… basic?
And in This Corner: The Hipped Roof 🏡
Smooth, sloping on all sides like it was sculpted by a zen architect. The Hipped roof is the cool, calm, and collected cousin of the Gable. It’s sleek and sturdy—like it just walked off an architecture runway.
Pros:
✔ Super stable (wind ain’t got nothin’ on it)
✔ More shade = cooler home
✔ Great for curb appeal
Cons:
✖ More complex = more $$$
✖ Slightly less attic space
So… Which One’s Better?
Honestly? It depends on your vibe.
Want bold lines and simplicity? Go Gable.
Prefer a smoother, more elevated aesthetic with a bit more durability? Hipped’s your winner.
