Found a hot trail this evening and picked up 5 more and a matching pair. Before the spring bloom, now is the best time to scout and try to get a game plan out together for next year. I learned a lot more about this place today that is going to tweak a few things for next year.

The biggest factor in mortality rates in young bucks other than meat hunters is fighting. The skull sutures that go down the middle and sides of the skull, when cracked is almost certain death. They don’t go see the neurologist or the vet. They get a fever, bed down and wait on the great spirit. If you find a dead head odds are it’s not disease.

We made a small round after the burn today. Found a small shed and young dead head. I hate to find them like that but that’s life.

Somebody finally shed his horns. Shed hunting season is almost here. I normally don’t even start looking till February 14. Stay out, let them feed and you will find more bone.

I talk about this a lot with my clients and sometimes it pushes them away. The only way you can improve the overall nutrition of your herd is by planting the right large plots (5%) of your overall acreage. This time of year is very stressful on your herd as bucks are trying to put weight back on. In this picture are 9 different bucks that age from 1.5-4.5. The only thing on their mind right now is nutrition. You will never be able to do this with protein feeders and supplements. It takes a plot!

A little before and after pics of the new burn. Realistically maybe 60% of the woody stem plants are dead and won’t be coming back. Next year the burn will be different and maybe I can get half of the other half. Regardless, this place will be night and day different in browse levels for the new year.
Minerals are going in next along with some high protein plots.
If your interested in going to the next level reach out to me 501-554-2824. I’m the only wildlife/habitat manager that’s telling the truth and actually has the results!

A little before and after of part of my new project. There was about 10 acres of 13-15 yr old plantation that has never been thinned or burned. Before the burn there was zero browse whatsoever. Debris has been eliminated and here in a few months there will be browse where there was no browse. This void is about to turn into food!

I just picked up 100 acres of marginal habitat. 22 year old plantation with a small creek drain winding through it. Exactly what I wanted for Christmas!
I can’t wait to turn this property into a deer/turkey paradise. I smell smoke in the future. I will keep you updated on the process and just how easy it is to turn a property around!
Merry Christmas to me!
