It's really easy to get distracted by a gorgeous kitchen or perfectly staged living room when you're touring a house.

But you're not buying the staging.

Pay attention to the things that will affect what it's actually like to live there.

Open the closets. Look out the windows. Listen for noise. Think about where your stuff would go. Walk through the normal parts of your day in your head.

Sometimes the little things tell you more about a house than the impressive things do.

Love the backyard.

Already know where your furniture would go.

And still decide not to buy it.

Maybe the numbers don't feel right. Maybe there's something about the location you don't love. Maybe another concern comes up. Or maybe you just aren't ready to say yes.

Liking a house doesn't obligate you to buy it.

Sometimes figuring out what isn't right gets you a little closer to figuring out what is.

It's surprisingly easy to walk into a house and get distracted by someone else's paint colors, furniture or decorating choices.

But a lot of the things you notice first can be changed.

What you can't easily change is where the house sits, the size of the lot, the basic layout or what's around it.

Sometimes you have to mentally erase the current owner's choices and look at the house underneath them.

Your first home doesn't have to check every box for the rest of your life.

Maybe it has a smaller yard than you'd eventually like. Maybe it doesn't have the dream kitchen. Maybe you know you'll eventually need another bedroom.

That doesn't necessarily make it the wrong home.

Sometimes the right first home is simply the one that works for your life, your budget and your goals right now.

Your first home is allowed to be a stepping stone.

Not necessarily.

Having a car payment, student loans, credit card debt or other monthly obligations doesn't automatically disqualify you from buying a home.

There are several pieces that go into determining what you may qualify for, which is why I'd rather see someone ask the question than assume the answer is no.

You don't have to make yourself financially perfect before you're allowed to start asking about your options.
