In the 1830s, nestled along Parr's Ridge, a small settlement of houses and stores began to take shape. This burgeoning community, lacking an official name, was the humble beginning of what we now know as Mount Airy. The residents of this early settlement faced many challenges, but their determination laid the groundwork for a thriving town.

By the 1840s, the need for a church and educational facilities became apparent to the few citizens of the settlement. In 1846, the Ridge Presbyterian Church was constructed, serving as a cornerstone for the community. The basement of this church doubled as a private school for the next 20 years, highlighting the town's commitment to education. This historic building, preserved through the years, is now known as Pine Grove Chapel, a testament to the community's enduring values.

The period between 1833 and 1850 was transformative for the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, which connected Baltimore to Frederick and beyond. Parr's Ridge presented a significant engineering challenge, but the successful construction of tracks and a station in the village marked a turning point. The railroad spurred economic growth, with much of Mount Airy's prosperity tracing back to this pivotal development.
An interesting anecdote from this era involves an Irish B&O brakeman who, suffering from the cold winds atop Parr's Ridge, suggested the name "Mount Airy." The name resonated with the townspeople, and it was officially adopted, giving the settlement its enduring identity.

The decade following 1860 was marked by the Civil War, a period of national turmoil. Although Maryland remained with the Union, Mount Airyโ€™s sympathies lay with the South. The B&O Railroad became a crucial supply line for northern troops, necessitating a New Jersey regiment's presence in the town. Soldiers were quartered at Pine Grove Chapel, which also served as a makeshift military post.
A poignant story from this period is that of a delirious soldier who wandered into nearby Ridgeville and died. He became the first person to receive a Christian burial in the land behind the church, a small but significant moment in Mount Airyโ€™s history.

By the 1890s, Mount Airy had grown significantly. The construction of the Episcopal Church, followed by Methodist and Southern Methodist churches, reflected the townโ€™s expanding religious and cultural landscape. In 1895, the B&O Railroad, still grappling with the challenges of Parr's Ridge, undertook the construction of a tunnel. This engineering marvel was one of the longest tunnels east of the Rockies at the time and brought with it both progress and turbulence, as the labor force engaged in frequent brawls and altercations.

For many years, the B&O Railroad continued to be a lifeline for Mount Airy, even transporting children and the ill to the Garrett Sanitarium for medical care. However, as time passed, the town's economic ties to the railroad diminished. Today, Mount Airy is a vibrant community, home to families who work in the Baltimore/Washington corridor and those who have lived here for generations.

Mount Airyโ€™s rich history is evident in its preserved buildings and the stories passed down through generations. From its early days as an unnamed settlement to a community shaped by the railroad, Mount Airy embodies resilience and growth.
