On National Senior Citizens Day, I'm reminded by my mother Pamela J Mahady-Palermo that she is a proud senior citizen. She posted it - I’m just repeating her sentiments. So, she has me thinking…
1. She doesn’t seem like a senior citizen.
2. Our perspectives shift over time. When we moved “back” to the Harrisburg area in 1979 my mother and father were the youngest adults (30 Mom 36 Dad) on our block, by far. The neighbors were “old” and their kids had grown and moved on. I loved all my neighbors. They returned lost balls, tolerated an outdoor cat, and employed me to shovel snow and mow lawns. One even lent me his car for two weeks of lifeguard training. It was 1970’s Cadillac a boat. But what a nice thing to do.
3. There’s no way my mother is a senior citizen. She doesn’t act like one at all.
4. I did the math and now understand that my former neighbors in their late 40s and 50s weren't so old after all.
5. Mom is over 74 now and less than 76 (barely). She doesn’t care. She can’t be a senior citizen. She’s still the same Mom. Maybe she really doesn’t KNOW if she’s a senior citizen but likes the title anyway ???
So what is a senior citizen? According to my research a senior citizen is 65 and sometimes 62. Either way, I’m creeping up on it and Ryan Mahady, you are too 🤔
Any advice is appreciated and to all those who qualify - Happy Senior Citizens Day!
