Pretty cool technology!
Our Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Has Arrived
Training for our new Unmanned Aerial System is officially underway. This week, community members may notice training flights overhead as our pilots work through required procedures. These flights are part of ensuring our team is fully confident before the program becomes operational.
As this technology becomes more widely available nationwide, UAS programs have proven to enhance public safety in key ways, helping both police and fire responders quickly identify when more or fewer units are needed, pinpoint the location of individuals in danger, and gain a clearer understanding of potential threats before arriving on scene.
Just as important, our program is built with strong safeguards. In accordance with our UAS directive, flights are documented, conducted only for a defined purpose, and operated in strict alignment with constitutional protections, FAA regulations, privacy expectations, and our departmental prohibited‑use limitations. (You’ll soon find our policy, transparency dashboard, and flight‑log information published on our website.)
This tool will help our police and fire responders serve Bettendorf more effectively, support de‑escalation efforts, and maintain a careful balance between safety and the privacy rights our residents rightly expect. We look forward to sharing more as the program progresses.
