🚨 For Sale

Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea lists Richard Neutra & Michael Maltzan compound for sale.

A one-of-a-kind property with three unique structures has hit the market for $9.8 million. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist, Flea, is the seller.

The 5.7-acre desert property just outside Los Angeles features a two-bedroom, one-bathroom, midcentury-style house that was built by famed architect Richard Neutra in the early 1950s. The stylish 1,350-square-foot dwelling is made mostly of glass, with a stone fireplace and built-in furniture including a sliding breakfast nook as well as a sofa that features a record player and speakers.

Not far from the Neutra house is a larger, dramatic, seven-sided pad that was built by AD100 architect Michael Maltzan and resembles a spaceship. Some sides are white and windowless while others are made completely of glass, and all of them surround an open-air courtyard at the center of the home. A small addition juts out from the heptagon shape, and in between the two sections of the house, there is a window looking out from a subterranean room. Interior photos show light wood floors and concrete elements throughout the space, and a the primary suite features a particularly unique bathroom, with a blue curved tile wall around the shower and a skylight above it.

The third structure on the hilltop plot is a small wood cabin with a bed, a loft, a small bathroom, and an outdoor shower. It was built by Peter Staley of Mind Tree Arts, who uses “naturally felled locally sourced trees,” according to his website, and it would make a perfect guest house for visitors. Rounding out the offerings is a picturesque lap pool with a large deck, pavilion, and plenty of succulents surrounding the area. This outdoor refuge was designed by Johnston Vidal Projects, the same firm who collaborated with Terremoto to build pools for Kirsten Dunst and Mandy Moore.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Freeman House hits the market.

The residence, which incorporates cast concrete blocks both inside and out, is among the architect’s most important works, but needs restoration.

The University of Southern California is selling a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Los Angeles home, one of four in the city using concrete blocks, for $4.25 million.

The Samuel and Harriet Freeman House in the Hollywood Hills was constructed with more than 12,000 cast concrete blocks used both inside and out, and features a salon-style layout with a central hearth, partially open kitchen and several outdoor spaces. It was created by the famed American architect between 1923 and 1925.
The three-bedroom, 2,884-square-foot residence is “a treasure that needs restoration,”

The Freemans became enamoured with Wright’s work when they were guests at his Hollyhock House in East Hollywood, a building that “bridges his Prairie style of the preceding decades and his textile block structures of the 1920s,” according to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

The couple commissioned Wright to build a $10,000 home, which ultimately cost $23,000, according to the foundation. A champion of organic architecture—which melds the natural and built environments—he used local sand to create the concrete for the blocks, which give the home a unified design throughout.

It is one of “Wright’s 20 most important houses…the missing link between two World Heritage sites: Taliesin and Fallingwater,” according to the writings of architectural historian Kathryn Smith, who was quoted in the listing. “The spatial design, the main room opening through transparent diagonal corners, the unique concrete block detailing, and the bold hillside setting with expansive city views…all create a spectacular expression.”

After 61 years in residence, the Freemans donated the home to the USC’s School of Architecture. The school made the house structurally sound, but the cladding needs to be restored, as do the systems throughout the house.

The property includes many of the original furnishings designed for the house by Wright and Rudolf Schindler, an Austrian-born architect and concrete enthusiast working in Los Angeles.

A pristine Pasadena midcentury by architect John Galbraith just hit the market.

If you’re on the hunt for a nearly perfectly preserved midcentury home in California, look no further. Perched on almost a full acre lot in Pasadena, the 1956 residence offers sweeping views of the mountains above and the city below. Since being built, the home was owned by the same family for 57 years before being sold for the first time last year.

Today, the single-level dwelling is owned by Grammy award-winning DJ, producer, and songwriter Christian Karlsson, also known as Bloodshy. The acclaimed musician, who has written hits for various artists including "Toxic" for Brittney Spears, purchased the home in 2020 with his partner for $2,385,000. The couple is now putting it up for sale after treating the space to a revamp.

Among the home’s most notable period details are polished concrete floors, mahogany cabinets, and a two-sided fireplace with a floating hearth.

Extensive glazing and sliding glass doors promote easy indoor/outdoor living throughout the three-bedroom dwelling, which spans across nearly 4,000 square feet. In addition to large gathering areas and a free-flowing layout, the property also includes a separate detached flex space, as well as an oversize two-car garage.

Happy birthday to artist Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass which was unveiled on this day June 24 in 2012

A 456-foot-long concrete slot was constructed on LACMA’s campus, over which sits a 340-ton granite megalith. As visitors walk into the slot, it gradually descends to fifteen feet in depth, running underneath the boulder into an open central chamber before ascending back up.

Levitated Mass was originally conceived by Heizer in 1969; a drawing of the work is in the collection of the Staatliche Museen ze Berlin. The original attempt to build the sculpture took place in 1969 when a 120-ton rock was obtained by Heizer in the Sierras above Reno, Nevada. Although a slot depression had been excavated in a northern Nevada dry lakebed to set the megalith on, the rock proved too heavy to load, breaking one of the two cranes being used. The slot was never combined with the megalith. In 2007, Heizer was working at the then Pyrite-Hubbs Quarry in nearby Riverside County when a 340 ton megalith came off the quarry wall during a detonation. The large size and impressive scale of the boulder were perfect criteria to realize Levitated Mass. It was soon developed between Heizer and LACMA director Michael Govan that this work could be constructed at LACMA.
