ON THE MARKET: The Henbest-Birkett Residence by Pierre Koenig, 1966, with recent interior renovations by Architectural Digest AD100 designer Jamie Bush + Co . Koenig, who’s so associated with glass and steel construction, opted for an engineered wood framing and a folded-plate roofline, making this home, somewhat of an outlier among his work. For Koenig and the other modernists, so much about California living was bringing the outdoors inside, or extending the living space outwards and with landscape design by TERREMOTO LANDSCAPE , I can’t imagine a more lush and well-designed landscape to incorporate. Koenig is one of those architects whose work only gets better with each property of his I see, while deceptively simple, I always find there’s something new for me to discover. DM me for more info.

ON THE MARKET: The Anderson Residence by Aaron G. Green, FAIA, 1959. There’s something deeply calming about a midcentury house perched above the Pacific. Between the sea breeze, the sound of waves breaking below and the endless views, you’re immediately transported somewhere else. Green, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, joined Wright as a Taliesin Fellow in 1940 and remained closely associated with him until Wright’s death in 1959. Walking through the Anderson Residence, that connection is unmistakable—from the V-shaped plan opening toward the ocean and the sharply pitched rooflines to Wright’s signature use of compression and release as you move from one space to the next. And yet, the house feels entirely its own. This is one of the more special homes I’ve had the great pleasure of showing. It’s hard not to stand there looking out over the Pacific and wonder what it must be like to wake up here every day. DM me for more info.
